Covert Issues borrows its name from Al Sharpton who, in the wake of the murder of Sean Bell, acknowledged that race is a “covert” issue in police shootings of unarmed men of color. I executed the first incarnation of this project in 2007 as a response to Bell's murder the night before his wedding. For the last eight years, I have been tracking similar deaths of unarmed or lesser-armed civilians by police officers and have constructed an archive of these deaths in an effort to use visual art to raise awareness and open a dialog about the militarization of our police forces, the surveillance apparatus of the State, and the fatal effects of profiling on targeted communities. This project will continue until the murders stop.
