The C.O.U.P. Issue 1.1 examines police violence, the Prison Industrial Complex, and their debilitating and often fatal affects on targeted communities (poor, urban, black, and brown). Featuring the work of writers currently incarcerated in federal penitentiaries across the U.S., our inaugural issue offers intimate views of life in federal prison and candid critiques of the abusive, inhumane policies and tactics used to control incarcerated people. Also included are articles by Sharon Daniel (Film and Digital Media/UC Santa Cruz), Walter Johnson (History/Harvard), and Dylan Rodriguez (Ethnic Studies/UC Riverside), each of whom interrogates, respectively, the public’s willful denial of the injustices that structure and permeate social relations; the unaccounted for though not unforeseeable excesses that a punitive society produces; and the global expansion of the U.S. prison regime as an integral aspect of the State’s neo-imperial project.
